Guyana Police Force Bolsters Traffic Ranks at Accident Hotspots

The Guyana Police Force Traffic Department is increasing its presence at identified accident hotspots in regions three and four. This decision comes in response to a recent surge in fatal accidents, as outlined by Acting Traffic Chief Superintendent Dennis Stephen.

Based on the latest statistics, 110 lives have been lost on the country’s roadways this year. Fatal accidents saw a staggering 100 percent increase between January 1, 2023, and February 18, 2023, compared to the same period in the previous year. An assessment conducted by the Traffic Department identified Friendship Public Road and Land of Canaan on the East Bank of Demerara, La Bonne Intention and Hope Public Road on the East Coast of Demerara, and the Lenora Public Road on the West Bank of Demerara as critical accident hotspots.

Acting Traffic Chief Superintendent Dennis Stephen attributed these accidents primarily to speeding and aggressive driving, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced traffic surveillance.

Coordinator of Guyana’s National Road Safety Council, Ramona Doorjen, advocates for intensified collaboration to combat the rise in road fatalities. She stresses the necessity of conducting a comprehensive evaluation of accidents to implement sustainable interventions, ultimately making the roadways safer.

This initiative represents a significant step towards ensuring safer roads and reducing accidents.
