Guyana Pays Tribute to Late Lieutenant Colonel Michael Charles: Leader, Father, Friend

Guyana remembers Mike Charles

Today, the nation united to honor and remember Lieutenant Colonel Michael Charles, a distinguished aviator, father, and leader, who will forever be remembered as a national hero.

Lieutenant Colonel Michael Charles, born on June 2, 1962, dedicated 40 years of his life in service to Guyana, starting in 1981.

His illustrious military career involved navigating Guyana’s skies and exploring the country’s hinterland regions.

Beyond his contributions to the military, Mike is celebrated by his family as a loving father and leader who held a deep affection for both his country and his kin.

Kimberly Charles, Mike’s niece, fondly remembers him, saying, “Most of all, he wasn’t just my uncle Mike, he was everyone’s uncle Mike. He loved kids, especially his own and he made us all feel like family. And even within our family, he was a leader among his brothers, a dutiful son, a remarkable husband, and father. He made us proud and was also very proud of each one of us.”

Mike Charles leaves behind a legacy of love, leadership, and pride.

He is survived by his four children: Johnathan, Noah, Rebekah, and Sueann.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali and Prime Minister Brigadier Mark Phillips also shared their reflections on the late Lieutenant Colonel.

President Ali described Mike Charles as a close friend and confidant, emphasizing that every flight he took was an act of love and honor for Guyana.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips, remembering Mike as one of the best in the Guyana Defence Force, highlighted the exceptional contributions of Charles and his colleagues, stating, “They were the crème de la crème, the best in GDF. Mike Charles, my squaddy, was among the best in GDF too.”
