Earlier today, the Nation bid farewell to Ashton Chase, the last surviving member of the four Stalwarts who formed the Political Affairs Committee and the PPP (People’s Progressive Party).
President Irfaan Ali lauded Chase’s remarkable contributions and emphasized that his work has left a lasting legacy for all Guyanese to take pride in.
Born on July 8, 1926, Ashton Chase made significant contributions to Guyana’s social and political landscape, as well as the legal fraternity and trade unionism, not only within the country but across the Caribbean region.
During the memorial service, heartfelt tributes were dedicated to Chase’s long years of service to the people. He stood as a prominent figure in the early trade union activism of the country and authored a highly influential work on the history of trade unions.
President Irfaan Ali highlighted that Ashton Chase’s legacy serves as a powerful reminder of our collective purpose to serve humanity.
The commemoration also saw warm tributes from St. Vincent & the Grenadines Prime Minister, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, and reflections on Chase’s contributions by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Manzoor Nadir.
Chase’s remains were cremated at Good Hope on the East Coast of Demerara, marking the end of an era for a distinguished and influential political figure in Guyana’s history.
