Guyana observed Diabetes and Tourism Awareness Month today with the “Sweet Escape” 2K|5K Trail and Road Walk|Run|Bike event at the Botanical Gardens in Georgetown.

Organized by the Bread of Life Foundation in collaboration with Stride592 and other partners, the event highlighted the importance of physical activity in preventing and managing diabetes.

The activity featured 2-kilometer and 5-kilometer routes, allowing participants to walk, run, or bike while engaging in nature and health-focused activities.

The Ministry of Health used the occasion to promote early detection and prevention of diabetes, encouraging citizens to get tested and adopt healthier lifestyles.

Efforts to combat diabetes have expanded significantly under the Ministry’s initiatives.

These include broader access to diabetic retinal examinations, advanced training for healthcare professionals, and the development of community-based educational programs aimed at raising awareness.

Health facilities nationwide now offer testing and treatment for diabetes, enabling Guyanese citizens to access care more easily.

The Ministry has also committed to investing in research and data collection to better monitor diabetes trends across the country.

This approach is designed to ensure that health policies remain effective and responsive to the needs of the population.

The event served as both a public health initiative and a celebration of Guyana’s natural beauty, drawing attention to the dual focus of the month on health and tourism.
