Guyana Law School Plans Advance as Feasibility Studies Continue

By Saskia Warrick | February 4, 2025

The government is advancing plans for the establishment of the Guyana Law School, with land identified and feasibility studies in progress.

The update was provided during the parliamentary scrutiny of the Ministry of Legal Affairs’ $1.6 billion budget approval.

Seven acres of land have been earmarked at the University of Guyana’s Turkeyen campus for the proposed institution, which will be managed by the Council of Legal Education of the West Indies (CLE).

A preliminary feasibility study has been submitted to the CLE, and a subcommittee has been formed to oversee the project’s development.

Meanwhile, efforts to update and consolidate Guyana’s legal statutes are nearing completion.

The last law revision was done in 2012, but with significant legislative changes over the years, a new revision covering laws up to December 31, 2022, is expected to be finalized by June this year.

Additional investments in the legal sector include the acquisition of a new case management system for the Attorney General’s Chambers, aimed at improving efficiency in handling legal files.

Continued subscriptions to major legal research platforms such as LexisNexis and Westlaw will also support legal practitioners in their work.
