Guyana Launches Fire Prevention Month

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) has officially launched Fire Prevention Month, emphasizing a strong focus on fire prevention awareness and education.

The month-long initiative kicked off with a religious observance at the GFS Headquarters on Homestretch Avenue.

During the launch, Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Robeson Benn, urged the nation to take a more proactive role in preventing fires, especially in light of the alarming increase in malicious fire-setting incidents.

Minister Benn stressed the importance of collaboration between families, schools, and religious organizations in advocating for fire prevention. He emphasized that a comprehensive effort is required to prevent the tragedies experienced throughout the year.

Chief Fire Officer, Gregory Wickham, announced that the GFS has devised a strategic plan to prevent fires nationwide. As part of the month-long observance, the GFS will conduct outreach activities at market squares, distributing informational pamphlets and engaging with shoppers.

Various activities are planned for Fire Prevention Month, including open days at fire stations, job fairs, fun fairs for children, and inspections of schools, private, and public offices.

The month is observed under the theme, “For the Future of Our Nation, Practice Fire Safety and Prevention.”
