In a significant milestone for Guyana’s healthcare sector, the Ministry of Health unveiled a comprehensive 5-year plan aimed at addressing mental health, suicide prevention, and substance abuse.
The launch of the National Mental Health Action Plan and National Suicide Prevention Plan for 2024–2030 marks a pivotal moment in the country’s approach to mental health care.
Developed in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) and after consultations with stakeholders, the plan is tailored to address the specific challenges, gaps, and progress in Guyana’s mental health, suicide prevention, and substance abuse initiatives.
According to Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony, the new plan emphasizes practical steps aimed at reducing mental health issues, suicide rates, and substance abuse cases.
He underscored the importance of continued implementation and highlighted the effectiveness of telemedicine, with plans to expand its reach to 25 additional sites.
Dr. Rhonda Sealey-Thomas, Assistant Director of PAHO/WHO, commended Guyana’s commitment to mental health and pledged ongoing support.
She expressed confidence that the action plan for 2024–2030 will guide the implementation of priority mental health policies and strategic actions, emphasizing principles of universal health coverage, human rights, equity, non-discrimination, and empowerment.
The launch builds upon previous initiatives, including the National Mental Health Plan 2015–2020 and the introduction of community-based mental health services with PAHO’s technical cooperation in 2016.
Significant progress has been made since then, leading to a gradual reduction in annual suicide rates.
With the unveiling of this comprehensive plan, Guyana takes a significant step forward in promoting mental health and well-being for its citizens.
