Guyana is celebrating Environment Week, coinciding with the June 5 observance of World Environment Day.
The week-long celebration began with a series of walks across various regions, including East Berbice Corentyne.
In Region 6, the march commenced at Tacama Turn and concluded at the State House in New Amsterdam.
This event aimed to raise awareness about environmental preservation under the theme “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.”
Head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Berbice, Sasenarine Tomby, highlighted the event’s significance in bringing together various agencies and stakeholders to share knowledge on protecting the environment.
Tomby emphasized the importance of community involvement in environmental preservation, urging people to come together to protect and preserve the planet.
Mayor of New Amsterdam, Wainwright McIntosh, applauded the EPA for organizing such an impactful event within the township.
He noted that the event sends a strong message about the importance of maintaining and protecting the environment.
World Environment Day, led by the United Nations Environment Programme, has been held annually since 1973.
It has grown to become the largest global platform for environmental outreach, celebrated by millions of people worldwide.
This year’s observance on June 5 continues to emphasize the critical need for sustainable environmental practices and awareness.
