Guyana Joins Global Relay for Life Initiative to Combat Cancer

By Delicia Janniere

Guyana has united with the global community in support of the Relay for Life initiative, demonstrating a shared commitment to fighting cancer.

In a joint effort between the Guyana Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society, scores of passionate supporters and cancer advocates came together for the Relay for Life initiative.

The event signifies the ongoing battle against cancer, a disease that continues to impact the lives of millions worldwide.

The initiative kicked off with a symbolic gesture on Main Street Avenue in front of the State House, where trees were adorned with purple fabric. Cancer survivors and advocates wrapped the trees with fabric bearing the message, “Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back! United in the fight against Cancer,” symbolizing the spirit of the Relay for Life movement.

Among those present were cancer survivors like Nicola Schultz, who emphasized the importance of collective support in the fight against cancer.

Patricia Chase-Green, attending the event, drew inspiration from survivors and family members, urging everyone to rise up and stay strong.

President of the Guyana Cancer Institute, Bibi Saeedah Akhtar Hassan, highlighted that Relay for Life is a collaborative effort with the American Cancer Society, marked by a month-long series of activities under the theme “Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back! United in the fight against Cancer.”

She encouraged support for upcoming events, including a luminary ceremony, Sip and Paint session, and a walk-run-cycle race.

Relay for Life, pioneered by the American Cancer Society, is a community-based initiative aimed at honoring and celebrating cancer survivors, patients undergoing treatment, and their caregivers.

The Relay for Life initiative serves as a beacon of hope, uniting communities worldwide in the fight against cancer and offering support to those affected by the disease.
