On September 16, Guyana will actively take part in World Clean-Up Day, a worldwide initiative aimed at addressing the global solid waste crisis, particularly marine debris. In collaboration with the University of Guyana Student’s Society, the Junior Chamber International Guyana will lead a clean-up effort starting at 6 a.m.
The event will kick off from the seawalls near MovieTowne at Liliendaal, progressing along the highway and concluding at Ogle, East Coast Demerara. Malika Russe, Senior Vice President at UGSS, highlighted that the activity will incorporate engaging elements to raise awareness among participants.
Russe emphasized the importance of reducing plastic usage and encouraged attendees to bring reusable items like water bottles and bags. The initiative aims to showcase alternative solutions to single-use plastics.
Andrew Belle, President of CJI, urged everyone to get involved, underlining that environmental safety is a collective responsibility. He noted that annually, a staggering 19 to 24 tons of plastic contribute to the global waste load, emphasizing that everyone, regardless of their position, can make a meaningful contribution in combating this issue.
