Guyana Hockey Board Names Squad for 2024 PAHF Challenge in Bermuda

NCN reporter, Travis Seymour reports on the selection of Guyana’s national women’s hockey team by the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) for the upcoming 2024 Pan American Hockey Federation (PAHF) Challenge in Hamilton, Bermuda.

The GHB has chosen a formidable 24-member squad to represent Guyana at the PAHF Challenge from September 20th to 28th, 2024.

This tournament serves as a crucial qualifier for both the PAHF Cup in Uruguay and next year’s World Cup.

Guyana will compete against strong teams including hosts Bermuda, Brazil, Jamaica, Peru, and the highly ranked Mexico.

The squad features a mix of seasoned players and promising newcomers, drawn primarily from Guyana’s 2023 Under-21 team, which participated in the Junior Pan American Championships last year.

President of the Guyana Hockey Board and national coach Philip Fernandes expressed confidence in the team’s preparation.

He highlighted the challenges faced, including the scarcity of suitable training pitches, but emphasized their commitment to innovative training methods to ensure readiness.

Fernandes anticipates tough competition, particularly from Mexico, and recalled Guyana’s strong performance in the 2011 PAHF Challenge, where they finished runners-up to Uruguay in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
