The Guyana National Rugby team, affectionately known as the ‘Green Machine,’ is gearing up for an exciting challenge as they head to Trinidad and Tobago this weekend to participate in The Rugby Americas North (RAN) south zone clash.
The upcoming tournament marks Guyana’s return to international competition in the 15’s version since 2019.
Leading the team once again as its skipper is Jamal Angus, providing valuable experience and leadership on the field.
The squad features a lineup of familiar faces, including Owen Adonis from Police Falcons, Panthers’ Rondel McArthur, Godfrey Broomes, Lancelot Adonis, and Vallon Adams, who is based in the USA.
Other notable players include Makayah Smith and Daniel Anderson from Panthers, as well as Lionel Holder, Shawn David, James Osborne, and others.
The Guyana Defence Force is also well represented with players like Osbert Robertson, Kelvin Grant, David Garrett, Sean Phillips, and David Waldron.
Elisha Crawford stands as the lone representative for Caribs, while overseas-based athletes like Matthew Talbot, Godfrey Pollydore, Kevin Braithwaite from the US, and Adam Yhip of Canada add international experience to the team.
President of the Guyana Rugby Football Union, Ryan Dey, expressed confidence in the team’s preparation for the tournament, emphasizing the importance of execution.
He highlighted the upcoming RANs tournament as an opportunity for the team to compete and grow over the next couple of months.
Under the guidance of coach Larry Adonis, assistant coach Oslyn Olivier, and Manager Petal Adams, the team is ready to face Trinidad & Tobago in a series of home and away games.
The first match will take place in Port of Spain on April 27, with the return leg scheduled for June.
As the ‘Green Machine’ sets its sights on victory, the stage is set for an exhilarating clash on the rugby field.
