In a significant boost to its human capacity, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) proudly welcomed 74 new firefighters who successfully completed an intensive 11-week training course at the Leonora Training Centre, West Coast Demerara.
Hailing from Regions Two to Ten, the new recruits were urged to serve with distinction during a simple yet impactful graduation ceremony on Monday.
Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, expressed optimism about the enhanced capabilities of the GFS with the addition of the new firefighters.
He highlighted the implementation of new strategies and improved firefighting capabilities as key elements that would make the GFS more responsive to emergencies.
Minister Benn also emphasized plans to expand the GFS’ rescue and support services, especially considering its current role as the sole entity handling such incidents.
Meanwhile, Acting Chief Fire Officer, Gregory Wickham, addressed the new recruits, urging them to uphold principles of integrity, respect, and discipline throughout their careers.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline and integrity, traits that are crucial for firefighters who often face challenging situations.
The 11-week training, conducted from October 22 to December 15, included simulation exercises and comprehensive instruction to prepare the recruits for their roles as firefighters.
This significant addition to the Guyana Fire Service reaffirms the commitment to enhancing the nation’s emergency response capabilities and ensuring the safety of communities across various regions.
