In an effort to bolster its capabilities in forest fire management, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) is set to undergo additional training through a bilateral partnership with Brazil.
The training, slated to commence on April 25, comes in response to the heightened incidence of bushfires experienced during recent dry spells in Guyana.
Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn expressed his appreciation for the support, highlighting the joint effort as a significant step toward enhancing Guyana’s firefighting capabilities.
Minister Benn emphasized the importance of the collaboration with the Brazilian government, which includes conducting assessments of recent and ongoing fire damages.
This cooperation will involve aerial surveys and engagement with the Civil Defense Commission, aiming to improve Guyana’s readiness, capabilities, experience, and expertise in tackling forest fires.
Acting Fire Chief Gregory Wickham also welcomed the support from Brazil, noting that their assistance will include overflights and spotting activities to identify areas with ongoing bushfires.
Brazil will provide guidance and lend support to firefighting efforts, especially in areas that may be difficult for the GFS to access regularly.
Meanwhile, in a separate initiative to enhance the GFS’s capacity, the Jumbo Jet group of companies donated two tenders valued at approximately $40 million.
These tenders will be stationed in regions five and six, further strengthening the firefighting capabilities of the GFS across various regions of Guyana.
The collaboration with Brazil and the donation of firefighting equipment signify concerted efforts by both governmental and private entities to equip the GFS with the necessary resources and training to effectively combat forest fires and safeguard communities and natural habitats.
