Guyana Fire Service Receives Thermal Imaging Camera to Boost Rescue Efforts

By Kimberly Giddings, NCN News – November 22, 2024

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) has received a crucial piece of firefighting equipment, a Thermal Imaging Camera, which will enhance their ability to save lives and protect property during emergencies.

The camera, which was donated as part of a five-million-dollar contribution from Industrial Supplies Inc. and Meridian 60, will allow firefighters to identify individuals inside burning buildings, even in conditions of low visibility such as smoke-filled areas or intense heat.

The camera’s ability to provide clear visuals in hazardous environments will significantly improve the Fire Service’s response time and safety measures when navigating through dangerous situations.

The donation also included two rescue saws, further bolstering the GFS’s capabilities.

Shawn Groves, Director of Business Development and Emerging Markets at Meridian 60, expressed pride in contributing to the Fire Service’s work, noting that the equipment would aid in faster response times at fire scenes and accident sites.

Hemant Narine, General Manager of Industrial Safety Inc., also highlighted the importance of the donation, emphasizing that it would help the Fire Service protect lives, property, and infrastructure more effectively.

Chief Fire Officer Gregory Wickham received the donation on behalf of the Guyana Fire Service.

He expressed gratitude for the advanced equipment, noting that it would assist in overcoming challenges such as accessing heavily grilled structures during fires.

The addition of these tools is expected to significantly improve the Fire Service’s ability to respond to emergencies, ultimately saving lives and reducing damage.

This new equipment marks an important step forward for the Guyana Fire Service in its ongoing efforts to enhance firefighting and rescue capabilities across the country.
