The Guyana Fire Service marked a historic moment with the launch of its Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in Region Six, a significant step toward enhancing emergency response capabilities in the area.

At the New Amsterdam Fire Station, 10 Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and two drivers were inducted into the program, expanding the region’s capacity to provide life-saving interventions.

The EMS, initiated several years ago, aims to complement the efforts of the health sector by delivering timely medical assistance to those in need.

Since its inception, the service has responded to over 30,000 emergencies, including 40 deliveries, showcasing its vital role in the community.

Chief Fire Officer Gregory Wickham expressed pride in the EMS’s achievements, highlighting the significant impact it has had on saving lives within the region.

He announced plans to expand the service further by deploying additional EMTs to the Rose Hall and Corriverton Fire Stations, ensuring broader coverage and faster response times.

Wickham urged the public to utilize the EMS by alerting them to emergencies through the toll-free number 912, emphasizing the importance of community support in maximizing the service’s effectiveness.

Bhupaul Jhagroo, representing the Regional Democratic Council Chairman, lauded the Guyana Fire Service for extending the EMS to Region Six, recognizing its essential role in safeguarding the well-being of the region’s residents.

The launch event was attended by Deputy Regional Executive Officer Mary Samaroo and Regional Health Officer Dr. Vishalya Sharma, underscoring the collaborative effort between local authorities and the fire service to ensure the success of the EMS initiative.
