Guyana Fire Service Empowers Students with Fire Safety Knowledge at Exhibition

GFS hosts fair to promote fire prevention, safety (DPI)

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) organized an insightful exhibition for schools on Friday, aiming to educate students about fire prevention and safety.

The event provided students with hands-on experiences, including witnessing the operation of a hydraulic platform and exploring the interior of a fire tender.

Additionally, they received valuable information about firefighting equipment and engaged in fire prevention trivia.

GFS personnel were present to share their expertise, emphasizing the crucial importance of understanding fire safety practices.

Fire Prevention Officer Sheldon Sauns stressed the need for everyone to be well-versed in fire safety protocols.

A practical exercise demonstrated the significance of a swift and organized response during a fire emergency. Andre Ally, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, commended the initiative, underlining the Ministry’s commitment to raising awareness about fire safety and prevention.

He urged the public to exercise caution when handling fire and recommended the inclusion of fire prevention equipment in homes and offices.

The exhibition also featured demonstrations on how to use fire extinguishers, fire evacuation drills, and the operation of fire hoses.

Students were educated about the importance of early fire detection and prevention methods, including the use of smoke alarms, fire blankets, and safe electrical appliance usage.

The event took place at the new headquarters of the fire service on Homestretch Avenue in Georgetown.
