Guyana Fire Service Demonstrates Effective Firefighting Techniques

In an effort to address public concerns about fire tenders arriving at scenes with inadequate water supply, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) conducted a demonstration exercise at its Headquarters on Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown.

During the exercise, Divisional Officer Clive McDonald, who oversees operations in Georgetown, led the demonstration and addressed the media. He refuted speculations that fire tenders arrive with insufficient water, emphasizing that each tender carries 400 gallons of water.

McDonald explained the stages of a fire and highlighted that when they arrive at a fully developed fire scene, the initial 400 gallons of water can last only about 2 minutes.

Therefore, they often need to resort to alternative water sources like trenches, canals, or hydrants.

McDonald emphasized the importance of catching a fire in its early stages, stating that in enclosed spaces, tank water can be highly effective in combating fires.

This demonstration was part of the Guyana Fire Service’s observance of Fire Prevention Month, under the theme ‘For the Future of Our Nation, Practice Fire Safety and Prevention’.

The GFS recently marked its 66th anniversary on October 12.
