In a proactive move to enhance its firefighting capabilities, the Guyana Fire Service conducted a readiness exercise in the capital city of Georgetown, which aimed to improve emergency responses and equip firefighters for various scenarios.

The exercise took place along the route from John Fernandes Wharf to Robb Street, with firefighters testing and familiarizing themselves with firefighting equipment.

The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to maintain the highest standards in emergency responses and elevate the readiness of the country’s firefighters.

Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn, during his remarks, emphasized the importance of firefighters enhancing their roles in firefighting.

He stressed the need for a high level of readiness and awareness to effectively handle specific situations.

“We want them to up their role in terms of firefighting, particularly by elevating themselves with a high level of readiness and awareness so when they go to particular situations,” said Hon. Robeson Benn.

Acting Chief Fire Officer, Gregory Wickham, expressed satisfaction with the exercise, highlighting its role in bringing relief to individuals experiencing stress.

He emphasized that the primary goal of the Fire Service is to save lives and protect property from destruction by fire.

“I’m very pleased that we can execute our job and bring relief to those persons that are stressed, and that is our main goal and aim – to save life and property from getting destroyed by fire,” noted Gregory Wickham.

Looking ahead to the next year, the Fire Service anticipates further improvements, including the acquisition of new equipment.
