The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) has marked a historic milestone with its largest-ever graduation ceremony held at the Leonora Training Centre.

The ceremony saw the induction of 97 new firefighters, including the highest number of female trainees in the service’s history.

The recruits completed three months of intensive training, which began on May 13 and concluded on August 13.

Their training encompassed a wide range of firefighting techniques, drills, and safety protocols.

The new firefighters demonstrated their acquired skills and were commended by officials and family members present at the event.

Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn attended the graduation and acknowledged the significant investment made by the government in enhancing the capabilities of the Guyana Fire Service.

He noted the ongoing construction of four new fire stations, which is part of the broader effort to improve fire service infrastructure.

Fire Chief Gregory Wickham expressed confidence in the recruits’ readiness to handle the challenges they will face in their roles.

The Chief emphasized the importance of discipline, teamwork, and the application of their training as they start their careers in firefighting.

Additionally, several recruits received accolades for outstanding performance in various categories, including best practical firefighter and best theory, with Tiffany Caesar being recognized for her exceptional theoretical knowledge.

The graduation ceremony not only celebrated the achievements of the new firefighters but also underscored the Guyana Fire Service’s commitment to expanding and modernizing its workforce to better serve the community.
