In a bid to foster regional cooperation and share its successful agriculture model, Guyana is set to assist several CARICOM member states in the development of their agriculture sectors.
The focus will be on initiatives such as Barbados’ Brackish water shrimp production and shade house project, as well as aiding Trinidad in rice production.
A delegation from St. Lucia, led by its Agriculture Minister, is scheduled to visit Guyana next week to explore areas where the country’s expertise can contribute to the development of agriculture in St. Lucia.
Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha, Guyana’s Minister of Agriculture, highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting local farmers through various means, including grants, fertilizer distribution, and equipment assistance.
Additionally, a long-term assistance program is in progress to provide sustained support to farmers.
Guyana has made significant strides in achieving a 58% reduction in its contribution to the 25 by 2025 food import bill.
This reduction not only promotes food security but also encourages technical exchange among CARICOM member states and aims to eliminate trade barriers.
The collaboration signifies Guyana’s dedication to regional agricultural development, emphasizing cooperation and knowledge-sharing among CARICOM nations.
