Guyana Equality Forum Declares Venezuela’s Threat a ‘Threat to Humanity’

International Human Rights Day was observed

On International Human Rights Day, the Guyana Equality Forum expressed its concern, stating that Venezuela’s threat to Guyana’s territorial integrity is not just a national issue but a threat to humanity itself.

Joel Simpson, the Managing Director of the Guyana Equality Forum, led a gathering outside the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela’s Embassy in Georgetown.

The purpose was to observe a day of prayer and reflection, taking a firm stand against the perceived threat posed by Venezuela to Guyana and its people.

In a video clip, Simpson emphasized that the threats from the Maduro Administration are not only a challenge to Guyana’s national security but also a direct threat to human rights, safety, and livelihoods.

The Guyana Equality Forum believes it is crucial to take a stance against such threats and not remain passive in the face of potential risks.

Simpson urged citizens not to succumb to fear but to stay vigilant.

He emphasized the importance of awareness and concern without letting fear paralyze individuals, highlighting that being vigilant can contribute to the collective safety of the community.

Chief Colin Klautky, Head of the Guyanese Organization of Indigenous People, expressed his deep concern about the potential impact on the livelihoods of indigenous communities, particularly those residing in the Essequibo county.

He stressed that the majority of indigenous populations live in this region, and any threat to this area would create significant challenges for the indigenous communities.

The Guyana Equality Forum, comprised of civil society organizations and grassroots groups advocating for human rights and equality, extends its support to all Guyanese, including the LGBT community.

The organization’s declaration comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions between Guyana and Venezuela over territorial disputes.

The Guyana Equality Forum asserts that such threats go beyond national borders and should be considered a global concern.
