The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has successfully defended its national novice boxing title after a series of intense bouts in the Guyana Boxing Association’s Andrew “Six Head” Lewis Championships at the National Gymnasium.
Under the guidance of national coach Terrence Poole, the GDF Gym demonstrated exceptional performance throughout the championships and was recognized as the “Best Gym” at the conclusion of the event.
The final night of the championship featured 11 highly competitive bouts, showcasing the skill and determination of boxers from gyms representing the Republican, GDF, and the police force.
In the flyweight category, Andre Thompson from the Republican gym secured a victory over Daniel Garnett of the GDF after a points decision determined the winner.
Julian Clark of the Guyana Police Force emerged victorious in the bantamweight division, defeating joint-service competitor Joshua Thomas from the GDF. Clark’s outstanding performance earned him the title of the tournament’s best pugilist.
Melroy McPherson of the GDF demonstrated his prowess in the featherweight category by defeating Neville France from the Republican Gym. The referee stopped the bout after just two and a half seconds in the first round.
Zidhan Wray, also from the GDF, displayed remarkable strength in the super heavyweight clash, prompting the referee to end the fight 54 seconds into round two, securing Wray’s victory over teammate Rayon Harry.
Hullman Bovell of the Guyana Police Force also achieved an impressive victory with a first-round stoppage.
The evening witnessed additional victories by Sherwin Gravesande (GDF), Timothy Fraser (Republican Gym), Christopher Henry (GDF), Elliot Sinclair (GDF), Joseph Gardener (GDF), and Oswald Jewan (GDF).
The Guyana Defence Force’s exceptional performance ensured their retention of the national novice boxing title in the esteemed “Six Head” Lewis Championships.
