In observance of World Food Day, the Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), hosted an Agricultural Exhibition and Open Day event today. The celebration, held at Bourda Cricket Ground, aimed to raise awareness about global hunger and food security, while highlighting Guyana’s efforts toward achieving food security for its citizens.

World Food Day, celebrated globally on October 16, focuses on the importance of ensuring access to nutritious food for all. Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, emphasized that hunger is more than just a statistic – it is a critical global issue affecting millions. He underscored that governments worldwide, including Guyana, are working to address this crisis, not only through policy but through active efforts to ensure food security at the national level.

Minister Mustapha shared that Guyana is making remarkable progress in its food security efforts, striving towards a “Zero-Hunger” world. He highlighted the country’s commitment to providing citizens with access to healthy food and contributing to regional food security within the Caribbean.

According to the FAO’s latest report, undernourishment in Guyana has decreased to less than 2.5 percent, significantly lower than the regional average of 6.6 percent and the global average of 9.1 percent.

The theme for World Food Day 2024, “Right to Foods for a Better Life and Future,” reflects the global drive to improve food access and security. The event brought together various stakeholders, reinforcing Guyana’s determination to continue its progress in food security and nutrition.
