From May 19th to 25th, Guyana observes Emergency Medical Technician (EMS) Week, a time dedicated to honoring the invaluable contributions of paramedics, EMTs, and 911 dispatchers.

In light of this occasion, NCN News visited the headquarters of the Guyana Fire Service to shed light on the crucial role of EMS professionals and their impact on the Guyanese public.

Head of the EMS unit, Ron Morris, expressed appreciation for the dedicated work of EMS technicians over the years, emphasizing their commitment, dedication, and the vital service they provide to communities and the country at large.

EMT Bibi Khan, who serves with the Guyana Fire Service, shared her passion for working on the ambulance, stating that helping those in need of emergency care brings her immense satisfaction.

Khan detailed the process of responding to emergency calls, highlighting the critical steps from receiving the call at the control room to transporting patients to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

She recounted a memorable experience when she and her team delivered a baby in a car while en route to another emergency call, emphasizing the unpredictable and rewarding nature of their work.

Ambulance driver Marvin Lewis echoed Khan’s sentiments, emphasizing the excitement and privilege of saving lives and assisting in critical situations.

He reflected on the joy of bringing new life into the world by delivering babies during emergencies.

Khan also reminded the public of the emergency hotline number, 912, urging individuals to use it in case of emergencies to access timely assistance from EMS professionals.
