President Irfaan Ali emphasized the need for a restructured approach to the upcoming 2023 UN Climate Change Conference, known as COP 28.
Speaking at the Atlantic Council’s Front Page online event in Washington, D.C., he highlighted the importance of making changes to the conference’s format to address unresolved global issues related to climate change commitments.
President Ali stressed the urgency of addressing critical areas such as loss and damage, mitigation, adaptation, food systems, and climate finance. He expressed the belief that a revamped structure could lead to more positive outcomes.
Guyana is set to focus on advocating for forested countries at COP 28 and is hopeful for widespread support. President Ali underlined the need to reshape conversations about balancing energy transition and security.
The nation, along with CARICOM, will continue to champion accessible and equitable climate financing at COP 28. The key objectives for the conference will include expediting the global transition to clean energy and decarbonizing the energy industry in line with efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
