During the Guyana Energy Conference and Supply Chain Expo, Winston Brassington, Consultant for the Ministry of Natural Resources, unveiled promising developments in the country’s energy sector.
He announced that Guyanese citizens could expect a significant 50% reduction in electricity rates by mid-2025 with the commissioning of the gas-to-energy facility.
Brassington highlighted the government’s commitment to energy sustainability and cost reduction, emphasizing the construction of a power plant and a natural gas liquids facility in Wales.
These efforts aim to harness natural gas from the Liza Phase One and Two FPSOs, bringing the gas-to-energy project closer to realization.
According to Brassington, the gas-to-energy project remains on track, with works set to be completed by the end of the year.
He explained that the project would not only offer a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to the current energy mix but also ensure a seamless distribution network along the Demerara Berbice Interconnected System.
The timeline for the project’s completion was outlined, with pipeline and transmission works expected to be finished by the end of the year.
Additionally, the power plant and the NGL plant are projected to be online by the first half of the following year.
To fund this ambitious endeavor, approximately $80 billion has been budgeted for the project in 2024.
The government is also awaiting approval for a loan of US$646 million from the US Exim Bank to further advance construction.
This project not only promises to significantly reduce energy costs but also to meet the growing demand for electricity in Guyana, which is projected to reach almost 1,000 megawatts by 2030.
