Guyana and Zambia strengthen media cooperation ties

-by Shamiah Grant

In a strategic move to strengthen responsible reporting and develop the global media landscape, Guyana and Zambia are deepening bilateral ties to enhance media and economic cooperation.

During the 2026 World Press Freedom Day conference, Public Affairs Minister Kwame McCoy met with Zambia’s Minister of Information and Media, Cornelius Mweetwa.

The ministers reaffirmed their commitment to bilateral cooperation with a focus on cross-border learning and strategic partnerships aimed at enhancing their respective media sectors.

Both parties also signaled a strong intention for continued high-level engagement to advance these shared goals.

“Let us all together work earnestly in a forward movement with clarity and purpose to be united in the understanding that a free, fair and responsible press is not optional. It is actually essential to the development and the stability and the advancement of our society,” Minister McCoy said.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to reaffirm Zambia’s readiness to remain a trusted partner and advocate for press freedom and human rights regionally and globally,” Zambia’s Minister Mweetwa said.

Minister McCoy also highlighted that his ministry has trained more than 550 young journalists over the past five years.

He further emphasised the need to move away from an adversarial approach and instead foster constructive engagement to better support democracy and national development.
