At the Europe Day celebration held at Herdmanston Lodge, Prime Minister Mark Phillips emphasized the commitment of Guyana and the European Union (EU) to bolstering their partnership on democracy, human rights, and environmental conservation.

Prime Minister Phillips highlighted the EU’s significance as an essential trading partner and a valuable source of foreign direct investment for Guyana.

He expressed optimism about strengthening trade and investment ties under the Cariforum Economic Partnership Agreement, noting the growing interest of European investors in Guyana’s burgeoning economy.

Moreover, Prime Minister Phillips underscored the EU’s crucial role in supporting Guyana’s efforts to combat climate change, ensure free and fair elections, and enhance various sectors of the country.

EU Ambassador to Guyana, Rene Van Nes, reflected on the successful outcomes of previous commitments made during Europe Day observances.

He mentioned the fruitful results of the first EU Global trade mission to Guyana, which saw 25 companies from nine countries visiting the country, with 90% of them expressing strong interests in doing business in Guyana.

Ambassador Van Nes also announced plans for another trade mission facilitated by the EU Guyana Chamber of Commerce, launched during the previous trade mission, further indicating the EU’s commitment to fostering economic ties with Guyana.

Europe Day, celebrated annually on May 9th, commemorates the Schuman Declaration presented in 1950, which laid the foundation for cooperation, solidarity, and lasting peace on the European continent.

As Guyana and the EU continue to forge stronger bonds, their partnership promises to contribute to mutual prosperity, sustainable development, and shared values of democracy and human rights.
