The government has allocated a total of $16.9 billion for the expansion and improvement of air and river transport in Guyana for the year 2025.

A significant $7 billion will be dedicated to the air transport sector, with plans to expand the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) to accommodate the growing demand for travel.

With over one million passengers processed by the end of 2024 and the addition of eight new airlines, including Avianca and Liat 2020, the budget will fund the construction of a state-of-the-art 150,000-square-foot terminal at the airport.

The new terminal will feature modern amenities, including new duty-free zones, to enhance the airport’s capacity and improve the travel experience for passengers.

In addition, $9.9 billion has been allocated to support the river transport sector, with projects aimed at improving safety and efficiency.

Notable initiatives include the development of a new Parika Ferry stelling and waterfront project, which will transform the Parika area into a major regional hub for transportation and socio-economic activity.

The allocation will also fund dredging works along the Demerara River to ensure the safe passage of larger vessels, as well as the completion of ongoing repairs on the MV Makouria, Malali, Kanawan, and Sabanto vessels.

Funds will also be used to upgrade key river transport facilities, including the Goods Wharf and stellings at Bartica, Kumaka, and Port Kaituma.

These investments reflect the government’s commitment to improving Guyana’s transport infrastructure to meet the growing demands of both air and river travel.
