Guyana Advocates for Haiti at the United Nations Security Council

Guyana has set forth a mission to garner greater international attention and support for the ongoing crisis in Haiti, its fellow member nation in Caricom.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali revealed that this effort will be channeled through Guyana’s non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

The current state of affairs in Haiti is dire, with 5.2 million individuals in need of humanitarian assistance due to escalating sociopolitical instability, gang-related violence, and a cholera outbreak. Gang-related activities have reached alarming levels, with a surge in violence, armed robberies, and kidnappings.

President Ali emphasized Guyana’s commitment to rallying global awareness towards Haiti’s crisis, with the ultimate goal of ensuring the nation receives the aid it urgently requires. He also called on Western nations to increase their support for Haiti.

President Ali underscored that Guyana aims to use its temporary position at the Security Council to ensure that issues from around the world, including those concerning Haiti, are adequately represented.

The United States has announced plans to propose a resolution at the UNSC to authorize a multinational force in Haiti, following Kenya’s offer to lead a mission to the Caribbean nation. Additionally, CARICOM established an Eminent Persons Group, comprised of former Prime Ministers Dr. Kenny Anthony of Saint Lucia, Bruce Golding of Jamaica, and Perry Christie of The Bahamas, to further engage with Haitian stakeholders and build on positive steps taken in previous meetings.
