GTI Engineering Students Receive Cold Works Training

By Samuel Gillis

Mechanical engineering students at the Government Technical Institute (GTI) recently completed a specialized training program in the use of Cold Works technology, aimed at enhancing their skills and knowledge in maintenance, repair, and prefabrication techniques.

Conducted over a span of three days, the training was organized by Global Asset Integrity Services Guyana in partnership with ColdPad Company of France.

The initiative included theoretical sessions and practical workshops, providing students with hands-on experience in utilizing Cold Works technology.

Derek Cardinez, the Business Development Director of Global Asset Integrity Services, emphasized the significance of the training, particularly in the context of Guyana’s burgeoning oil industry.

He highlighted the importance of Cold Works technology in offshore environments where the risk of sparks and explosions necessitates specialized equipment.

“In offshore environments, you cannot have any type of sparks emitting, which can be the risk of having an explosion,” Cardinez explained. “So, we use specialized equipment that does not emit any form of sparks and any type of heat, combined with cold bonding and cold fusion technology.”

Frank Matteoli, the Director of ColdPad Company, underscored the durability and longevity of Cold Works technology, stating that it can withstand more than 20 years and is as permanent as welding but nonintrusive.

Following the completion of the training, two graduates shared their experiences and expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to learn new technologies.

Ann Maria Anthony, a Mechanical and Electrical Engineering student, highlighted the value of the training in reinforcing her passion for the field.

Akeem Miggins, another Mechanical and Electrical Engineering student, commended the experience gained during the program.

The collaborating companies pledged to continue providing training and promoting the use of Cold Works technology, recognizing its importance in various industries, including oil and gas.

The initiative reflects GTI’s commitment to equipping its students with practical skills and knowledge that are relevant to Guyana’s evolving industrial landscape.
