GTA Launches Inaugural One Guyana Open Tennis Tournament

The Guyana Tennis Association (GTA) recently unveiled their highly anticipated inaugural One Guyana Open singles Tournament, which will showcase the country’s top tennis players as they compete for a total of $2 million in cash and prizes.

Sponsored by the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport, the two-week-long competition will take place at the newly renovated National Racquet Centre court on Woolford Avenue.

Cristy Campbell, President of the GTA, emphasized the significance of this tournament for the local tennis scene, highlighting its potential to contribute to the sport’s growth and development in the country.

Director of Sport, Steve Ninvalle, expressed his pleasure on behalf of the NSC and the Ministry in supporting the tournament. He also revealed plans to replicate the court built at the racquet centre in other venues, ensuring more opportunities for tennis enthusiasts.

The One Guyana Open Tournament will feature four categories, including Men’s Open Singles, Ladies’ Open Singles, Men’s 35 Singles, and Men’s 45 Singles. The opening day witnessed an exhilarating match between former Men’s Champion, Anthony Downes, and the No.1 seed and 2022 Year-End Champion, Donnie Anderson.

Downes emerged victorious with a score of 6/0 – 6/2 in just over an hour, marking his return to competitive play since being dethroned at the GBTI Open in 2019.
