The Guyana Squash Association (GSA) is celebrating a successful 2024, marked by key milestones and achievements that have further solidified the sport’s growth in Guyana.
In an interview with NCN Sport, GSA Chairman of the Games Committee, Deje Dias, discussed the significant impact of the National Racquet Center on Woolford Avenue.
The facility, with its five courts and innovative walls that can convert the playing area from singles to doubles courts, has become an ideal venue for hosting major events.
The pilot event, the recently concluded One Guyana President’s Cup, showcased the center’s versatility and spacious environment.
Dias also highlighted the accomplishments of Guyana’s top-ranked champion, Nicolette Fernandes, who won the Masters Over-40 championship for the second time.
Fernandes continues to prove her extraordinary talent in the sport, demonstrating skills that are “supernormal.”
Additionally, Dias praised the senior Guyanese squash team for their triumph at the senior CASA tournament in August 2024.
Guyana clinched several titles, including doubles titles and overall victories in both the men’s and women’s categories, as well as in the veterans’ division.
For the first time, players in the President’s Cup were awarded monetary prizes, marking another milestone in the sport’s development.
Looking ahead, Dias and the GSA are focused on continuing the upward trajectory of squash in Guyana, with plans to enhance local tournaments and elevate the overall experience for players.
