The government of Guyana has officially broken ground for a new state-of-the-art hospital in Kato, Region Eight, in a move that President Irfaan Ali describes as an “explosion of development” for the region.

This new facility is set to replace the current hospital and is expected to be completed within 24 months.

The hospital will feature modern amenities, including an operating theatre capable of performing cataract and C-section surgeries, a fully equipped emergency room, diagnostic imaging services, digital X-ray, CT scans, a modern pharmacy, a dialysis center, pediatric services, and a contemporary maternity unit.

President Ali emphasized that this substantial investment reflects the government’s commitment to equality, ensuring that residents of the hinterland receive the same level of healthcare as those on the coastland.

Additionally, Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony highlighted the role of telemedicine services in the region, enabling individuals to become registered nurses through remote training opportunities.

The construction of this new hospital will be funded by a $97 million USD loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), with six other hospitals being upgraded nationwide.

The project will also provide employment to locals, with 60 people from the region set to work on the construction.
