Groundbreaking Begins for Soesdyke-Linden Highway Project: US$200M Investment to Transform Connectivity and Create Jobs

The transformation of Guyana’s infrastructure took a significant leap forward with the recent groundbreaking ceremony for the Soesdyke-Linden Highway project.

This ambitious undertaking, marked by a US$200 million contract, promises to reshape regional connectivity and open new economic opportunities across the country.

On Wednesday, President Dr. Irfaan Ali was present at the Mighty Enchanter Creek along the highway to witness the official signing of the contract.

The project is a cornerstone of the government’s broader investment strategy, aimed at linking Regions 4 and 10, as well as other hinterland communities and Brazil.

The highway project involves the reconstruction of 73 kilometers of road, the building of nine bridges, and the installation of two roundabouts—one at the Soesdyke-Linden junction and another near Millie’s Hideout in Linden.

Additional features will include pedestrian bridges, parking lanes, rest stops, high-quality reflective road markings, and enhanced drainage systems.

Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, highlighted the commitment to ensuring the highway’s safety and functionality, noting that 2,900 streetlights will be installed along the route to provide robust nighttime illumination.

The project, financed through a framework agreement between the Government of Guyana and the Islamic Development Bank, is being executed through a joint venture between Trinidadian firm NAMALCO and Guyanese company GuyAmerica Construction.

With an estimated completion period of two years, the highway is set to generate hundreds of job opportunities for local residents.

Furthermore, the Soesdyke-Linden Highway will be integrated with other major infrastructure projects, including the East Bank Demerara Four-Lane project and the US$35 million Wismar/Mackenzie bridge upgrade.

The completion of this highway is anticipated to enhance connectivity, support regional development, and contribute to the overall growth of Guyana’s economy.
