A grassroots athletics camp is currently in full swing at the Leonora Track and Field Facility, featuring esteemed US coaches Jonathan Terry and Shelton Gilyard.

Over the next three days, these coaches will be working closely with local track and field athletes, ages 11-22, to implement best practices that can unlock their athletic potential.

The initiative, supported by the government and announced by President Dr. Irfaan Ali, aims to elevate the standard of youth athletics in Guyana.

Both coaches, affiliated with the Matrix and Speed Capital clubs, bring extensive expertise to the camp, focusing on instilling a positive mindset and imparting valuable knowledge to the young athletes.

Coach Jonathan Terry expressed his goal of fostering the right mindset among the athletes, emphasizing the importance of dedication and hard work.

He believes that the guidance provided during these sessions will be instrumental in shaping the athletes’ future in track and field.

The camp’s comprehensive approach includes event management training and balancing academics with athletics, providing a platform to showcase their talents on a global stage.

Coach Shelton Gilyard highlighted the importance of equipping athletes with the necessary tools for their development, noting the enthusiastic and open mindset of the local participants.

This camp marks the first phase of a three-stage collaboration between the US coaches, the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), and local athletes.

The overarching goal is to support and develop young talent through a structured grassroots program.

The Leonora Track and Field Facility, currently undergoing upgrades, serves as the backdrop for this transformative event.

The sessions not only aim to enhance athletic performance but also to inspire long-term commitment to the sport.
