GPSU Threatens Industrial Action Over Lack of Collective Bargaining

By Saskia Warrick

The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) has issued an ultimatum to the Ministry of Labour, warning of potential industrial action if collective bargaining discussions are not initiated.

President Patrick Yarde asserts that the union’s attempts at engagement have been disregarded, prompting this decisive action.

While no specific timeline has been set for the ultimatum, Yarde emphasizes the importance of respecting the collective bargaining process.

The GPSU is advocating for a substantial 50 percent salary increase for public servants, a demand Yarde believes is both reasonable and sustainable.

In response, General Secretary of the PPP, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, acknowledged the issue but indicated that the government would handle it through legal channels.

Jagdeo criticized the GPSU, suggesting that the union has not adequately served the interests of public servants.

Despite government’s previous efforts to address wage concerns, including across-the-board increases of seven percent in 2021, eight percent in 2022, and 6.5 percent in 2023, the GPSU remains dissatisfied with the lack of genuine collective bargaining.

The situation underscores the growing tension between the GPSU and the government, with potential implications for public sector operations if a resolution is not reached promptly.
