In preparation for the increased energy demand during the Christmas season, the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) has already initiated measures to bolster the power supply.
Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), revealed that GPL has gone out to tender for additional power generation.
The bids have been evaluated, and discussions for additional power supply are set to begin.
Additionally, GPL is focusing on upgrading transmission lines and investing in new equipment, such as a 20 MVA transformer, to improve the power distribution system.
This follows years of underinvestment during the 2015–2020 period, which has led to failures in the aging infrastructure.
Dr. Jagdeo also explained that the frequency of power outages has been exacerbated by large-scale infrastructural projects, like roadworks and bridges, which require temporary disconnections of electricity.
The government plans to invest 200 million dollars this year to further upgrade the power distribution systems.
