Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has achieved a remarkable feat by successfully performing a kidney transplant on a seven-year-old girl, Angelica Soamnauth.
This makes her the youngest patient in the Caribbean to undergo such a procedure, breaking the weight limit barrier of 20kg.
Angelica was diagnosed with the final stage of kidney failure last year and underwent approximately 10 months of dialysis.
As the only child of the Soamnauth family, her father, Haimdat Soamnauth, expressed gratitude to the GPHC team for the successful operation.
He is optimistic about Angelica’s recovery and looks forward to her leading a normal life, including attending school.
Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, commended the GPHC team for their exceptional work, emphasizing Guyana’s commitment to providing world-class healthcare services.
While kidney failure is more prevalent in the adult population in Guyana, rare cases can be found in children.
The successful kidney transplant highlights the capabilities of the healthcare system in Guyana, offering hope and improved quality of life for young patients facing critical health challenges.
