As Childhood Cancer Day is observed, the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) continues to expand its services aimed at early detection and treatment of childhood cancer.

The hospital is working to improve identification methods and provide comprehensive care for affected children.

The Pediatric Medicine Department at GPHC has implemented measures to enhance early diagnosis, including medical evaluations and necessary surgical interventions.

Pediatric cancer patients are treated in a dedicated isolation area, designed to minimize exposure to infectious diseases while undergoing chemotherapy, biopsies, and other critical procedures.

Leukemia remains the most prevalent type of childhood cancer in Guyana. Treatment primarily involves chemotherapy, which has shown positive outcomes when administered early.

Supportive care is also available to help manage side effects such as nausea and low blood counts through medications and transfusions.

GPHC’s approach to childhood cancer care includes a specialized team of nurses trained to handle treatments and monitor patient progress.

Pharmacists ensure the availability of essential medications, further strengthening the hospital’s ability to provide consistent and effective care.

With these efforts, GPHC remains committed to improving childhood cancer treatment and offering vital support to young patients and their families.
