The Government of Guyana is set to amend laws addressing the illegal use of sirens and emergency lights on vehicles.
This announcement follows concerns over civilians using these devices to bypass traffic, a practice that has raised significant safety issues.
President Irfaan Ali, who convened a meeting with the Guyana Police Force and Attorney General, emphasized the urgency of addressing these violations.
The proposed legislation will include fines and the revocation of drivers’ licenses for those caught misusing sirens or emergency lights.
In his address, President Ali called on drivers to comply with existing traffic laws and prioritize safety and responsibility, particularly as the new regulations are set to take effect.
The President also noted that security companies authorized to use emergency lights will face stricter regulations.
Companies found to be abusing their privileges could have their emergency lights removed, and their security licenses may be suspended.
In light of rising road accidents and fatalities, the government, in partnership with the Guyana Police Force, is developing a comprehensive framework aimed at improving road safety.
