Gov’t Targets 100% Clean Water Access in Hinterland by 2025

By Kimberly Giddings | January 3, 2025

The government is on track to achieving full clean water coverage in the hinterland by 2025, with 91% of the population now having access to safe, high-quality water.

This progress aligns with the administration’s commitment to improving living standards in remote communities.

Between 2021 and 2024, significant strides were made, with over 90% of residents in every hinterland region now receiving water that meets health and safety standards.

Efforts continue to bridge the remaining gap, ensuring universal access within the next year.

For households in remote locations where the water network cannot reach, the government will provide water storage tanks to support rainwater harvesting as an alternative solution.

Since August 2020, more than $5.5 billion has been invested in hinterland water infrastructure, with $2.1 billion allocated in 2024 alone.

This initiative is part of broader national development efforts to enhance essential services and improve the quality of life for all citizens.
