Gov’t pledges continued investment as Bartica Regatta 2026 opens

The Bartica Regatta opened Sunday with a strong commitment from the government to expand and sustain the event.

Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips gave the assurance in his feature address at the opening, noting that the regatta continues to unite people.

“Regatta is a tradition. It’s also traditional for the Government of Guyana to support the regatta, and again this year I am happy to know that our government has once again supported financially and otherwise,” he said. “But I’d like to also commend the private sector of Guyana, and more particularly the businessmen and women of Bartica who continue to support this activity.”

The event has also drawn support from the diaspora and international visitors, reinforcing its growing appeal as a tourism highlight.

PM Phillips assured residents that the government will continue working through relevant ministries to expand and enhance the regatta.

He commended the resilience of organisers and participants, especially in the face of inclement weather leading up to the event.

“You have a government that will continue to support this tradition of hosting this regatta at Bartica, and it’s our intention to continue to work… to ensure that this regatta grow from strength to strength and get bigger every year,” he said. “So Bartica is one that will be here with us for many, many years to come, and you’re assured of our government’s support.”
