The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) General Secretary, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, has outlined significant advancements made by the government in its efforts to reduce poverty and improve the standard of living for citizens.
He discussed the considerable strides made in addressing poverty and improving the quality of life for Guyanese.
Referring to a study from the 1990s by economist Ramprakash, which showed that 87% of the population was living below the poverty line, Dr. Jagdeo pointed to the dramatic changes over the past few years.
The government’s initiatives have notably reduced the number of people out of work, with many individuals now employed.
The progress made reflects the positive impact of increased employment opportunities on the lives of citizens.
Since returning to office, the government has made substantial investments in the public sector.
These investments, amounting to an additional 90 billion dollars annually in public sector wages, have enabled many citizens to afford assets such as cars, land, and homes, while also accessing improved educational opportunities.
These factors contribute significantly to reducing poverty in the country.
In recent years, Guyana has shifted from being one of the least developed nations to becoming one of the fastest-growing economies globally.
The government’s actions have been essential in addressing the challenges posed by rising living costs on the global stage and overcoming poverty.
Additionally, a new initiative announced by President Irfaan Ali will provide a one-time cash grant of 100,000 dollars to every Guyanese citizen aged 18 and over.
This measure is expected to inject over 60 billion dollars into the local economy, offering significant financial support to individuals across the nation.
The government remains committed to continuing its efforts to promote long-term poverty reduction and improve the livelihoods of all Guyanese.
