The Government of Guyana will provide free eye examinations to all citizens as part of a strengthened national healthcare drive.

Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony made the announcement during the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with 67 service providers today.

Previously, free eye examinations were limited to individuals aged 18 and under and those 50 and older. The Health Minister noted that the removal of these age restrictions means that every citizen will now be eligible for complimentary eye testing.

This year what we want to do is open it up so that anyone who requires an eye test will be able to get one…and if when you test their eyes and they need a spectacle you will also have access to the $15,000,” the health minister said.

Dr. Anthony says these initiatives have already delivered meaningful benefits across the country, with 326,868 vouchers utilised in 2025 alone. Notwithstanding this number, he stressed that expanding access in hinterland and remote communities remains a key priority to promote more equitable healthcare services.

We don’t want people to be on the coast…want people to go to region one ,to seven, we want people to go to 8, we want people to go to nine so we can bring accessible care to those populations,” he stressed.

In addition to continuing free eye examinations, the MOU’s will strengthen other vital public health efforts, including HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening programmes.
