Residents of several Indigenous villages in the Moruca and Mabaruma Sub-districts of Region One are celebrating the latest milestone in sustainable energy with the Government’s solar panel initiative.
Over 1200 160-watt solar panels, along with LED lights, fans, and USB cables, were distributed by Housing Minister Collin Croal, marking a significant step towards renewable energy adoption in the region.
The impact of this initiative on the lives of children in these villages is profound, as highlighted by the beneficiaries themselves.
Candey James, a resident, expressed her gratitude, stating, “The panels will benefit my household by using it mainly for the children that study at night so instead of using the lamp you will be using the panel and I’m so thankful for the panel because it is a good initiative.”
Charlie Hill, another resident, emphasized, “We will use it especially for the children who study at night and will be able enough to help them in their education.”
Shirley Hill echoed the sentiments of appreciation, saying, “What was on the manifesto was completed and more to come so I want to say a special thank you.”
Community Service Officers were also trained to assist with the installation and maintenance of the solar panels, ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of the systems.
Housing Minister Collin Croal reiterated the significance of this endeavor, stating, “Please, we want you to care for these panels. We are calling them the solar home systems and they are intended for your homes… We are therefore providing for your children’s future.”
Villages like Chinese Landing, Koko, Father’s Beach, Imbotero, and Morawhanna in Region One have directly benefited from this initiative. With a vision to extend the reach, the project aims to impact 30,000 households in the hinterland regions.
This initiative marks a crucial step towards sustainable energy solutions, empowering communities and contributing to a greener future for Guyana.
