Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has announced a new government policy aimed at taxing companies that consume large quantities of electricity during peak hours.
This decision comes in response to Guyana Power and Light Inc.’s record-high electricity generation and demand.
Dr. Jagdeo highlighted that the surge in electricity consumption is partly attributed to large consumers who have transitioned from self-generation to the national grid due to government-subsidized electricity costs.
He also acknowledged that the current high temperatures have led to an increased usage of air conditioning units and fans, further exacerbating the demand for electricity.
In response to these challenges, the government will invest in an additional 30 megawatts of power generation capacity, set to be operational by the end of the year.
Furthermore, the Wales gas-to-energy project, expected to come online next year, is anticipated to significantly enhance electricity supply and reduce costs.
The initiative also calls for the cooperation of customers in adopting energy-conscious practices.
Factories, manufacturers, and other large consumers are encouraged to efficiently manage their production schedules to conserve electricity.
Households are advised to consolidate activities like laundry and ironing to specific days to minimize energy consumption.
