Government Warns Speedboat Operators Against Unauthorized Fare Increases

Public Works Minister Juan Edghill has issued stern warnings to speedboat operators plying the Parika-Supenaam route, cautioning against any unauthorized fare increases.

The government made its stance clear during a meeting with boat operators on Tuesday, as reported by Josiah Williams.

Minister Edghill emphasized that the government will not tolerate any unauthorized hikes in fares. He specifically addressed concerns raised by passengers regarding increasing fares and harassment when they refuse to pay the unauthorized prices.

Minister Edghill firmly stated that every passenger traveling on the route should pay the approved fare, which is set at $1300.

In response to the operators’ concerns about rising operating costs due to factors like increased fuel prices, Minister Edghill urged them to establish a speedboat association.

This would provide a structured platform for discussing their concerns, including the possibility of fare adjustments based on operating expenses.

Minister Edghill emphasized the importance of transparency in determining fare increases, highlighting the need for proper documentation and discussions based on operational costs.

Minister Edghill was accompanied by Minister Deodat Indar from the Public Works Ministry and representatives from the Maritime Administration Department.

MARAD has been tasked with verifying the documents and operational status of all boat owners and operators.

Additionally, MARAD will work on improving infrastructure such as rails and sheds and ensuring the provision of flotation devices for safety.

The government’s proactive approach to addressing concerns related to speedboat fares and operations underscores its commitment to ensuring fair and safe transportation for citizens.

By engaging with stakeholders and implementing measures to regulate fares and improve safety standards, the government aims to provide reliable transportation services for commuters traveling along the Parika-Supenaam route.
