Government Urges GPL to Boost Power Supply for Christmas Amidst Rising Demands

Gov’t ‘pressing’ GPL to deliver

With the arrival of new generators and transformers for the Guyana Power and Light (GPL), the government is actively pushing for the company to ensure an additional power supply by Christmas.

Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the PPP, addressed concerns about delays in the arrival and installation of the equipment.

GPL has acquired 17 reconditioned containerized generator sets, capable of producing 28.9 megawatts of power, just in time for the Christmas season.

The equipment reached its destination on Wednesday night and is slated for installation at the Columbia, East Coast Demerara substation, connecting it to the grid.

While Dr. Jagdeo refrained from providing a specific operational date, he highlighted assurances to have it operational between December 11 and 15.

However, due to the delayed arrival, the process may take a few more days.

Dr. Jagdeo emphasized the government’s urgency in ensuring an adequate power supply nationwide, particularly during the peak demand experienced during the Christmas holidays.

Acknowledging the recent implementation of a load-shedding schedule due to GPL’s insufficient capacity to meet increased electricity demands, Dr. Jagdeo stressed the importance of addressing the issue promptly.

Currently, GPL has a capacity to generate 167 megawatts, while the demand at the start of November stood at 172 megawatts.

To mitigate future challenges, the government has initiated plans to upgrade the power distribution grid, awaiting the evaluation of tenders for the installation of new electricity lines and substations.

As Christmas approaches and concerns over blackouts and heightened consumption rise, the government’s efforts aim to ensure a reliable and stable power supply for citizens across the nation.
